BETWEEN ANCIENT HEALING AND CONTEMPORARY SCIENCE

From behind the desk of COMO Shambhala’s premium Traditional Chinese Medicine partner Bao Zhong Tang, physician Koh Hwan Ling introduces the values of an ancient treatment.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is not only about knowledge gained from ancient medical scriptures. It is a way of life that has been practised for over 2,000 years and complements western medicine perfectly.

A review of over 20,600 studies on TCM featured in peer-reviewed journals across the world presents overwhelming evidence on the efficacy of acupuncture and herbal medicine in treating various clinical conditions. Acupuncture has been recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a viable treatment.

“Growing up in a Chinese family, I have seen TCM work wonders on my body from a young age”, says Dr Koh Hwan Ling, a physician at the Singapore-based TCM centre, Bao Zhong Tang.

Dr Koh counts her experience of seeing patients' pain alleviated as a defining highlight as a practitioner of traditional medicine.

ROOT CAUSE AND EFFECT

TCM aims to find and treat the root cause of the condition rather than the superficial symptoms. Dr Koh explains: “We are aiming to alter a patient’s long-standing body constitution and change it for the better.”

The journey towards re-establishing the balance between yin and yang in a patient’s mind and body, disrupting the chaos to the being, takes time, practice, and patience, but the results are outstanding.

The treatments regulate the qi and blood as well as dispel external factors such as wind, cold, or excessive heat. TCM also alleviates and even eradicates physical discomfort and provides mental relief.

BEYOND BELIEF AND RELIEF

“It is no secret that TCM treatments deliver better pain management”, says Dr Koh. “But this type of treatment and medicine can do so much more because we view the body holistically.”

Pre- and post-natal difficulties, skin conditions, depression and anxiety, tinnitus, insomnia, and IBS are several ailments that are treated with TCM. “All the symptoms that patients are reporting can be considered as an outward expression of an imbalance within the body”, she adds.

TCM is powerful as a standalone treatment and complements western medicine, physiotherapy, nutritional advice, and other forms of holistic healthcare.

It is within the approach of combining ancient healing and contemporary science that the partnership between COMO Shambhala and Bao Zhong Tang has become a reality and the holistic health of its clients a better one.
