ON KIDS AND YOGA: A MIND-BODY EXPLORATION

From exploring various yoga teacher training and healing practices to championing children’s wellbeing, founder of So Yoga, Sophie Spoor realised her purpose to help children and families through yoga. Meet our resident kids yoga teacher as she shares the importance of developing healthy habits in children to understand their bodies, emotions and thoughts as they step into adolescence.

On getting started with yoga

I used to run quite a lot. About 10 years ago, a friend of mine suggested that I attend a yoga class to work on stretching and flexibility. I tried different types of yoga until I found the right one for me. I was immediately hooked! A few months later, I signed up for my first teacher training in Hatha and Ashtanga.

It was a turning point in my life. I left a corporate career in sports marketing to start teaching. Along the way, I explored many different healing practices and teaching styles such as Yin, Restorative, and Pre & Postnatal. My personal practice is becoming softer and deeper as I grow. And here I am, teaching and enjoying yoga for many years now, and still in love with it.

On developing a special interest in kids yoga

I had always wanted to work with children in some way. When I discovered yoga for kids, it was a revelation. I felt I could contribute something useful that I would love. We live in a crazy, hurry-up world, and children chronically feel anxious and stressed. Studies prove yoga can make an impact not only on children’s strength, balance, and flexibility but also on their overall wellbeing.

As they learn to relax, concentrate and be gentle in a non-competitive environment, they are also introduced to a healthier mindset and lifestyle. It gives me immense happiness knowing I am planting seeds for kids to develop healthy habits and learn how to take care of themselves – physically and emotionally.

On dreaming purpose into reality

The mission of my company So Yoga is to bring fun, happiness, peace, and relaxation to children and families through yoga. Designed to be playful and easy to follow, I created MiniYOGI products such as cards, books, and mats to make yoga accessible to children.

With busy schedules, children are unable to attend daily or weekly yoga classes. With MiniYOGI, children and their parents are practising yoga anytime at home or anywhere!

I am currently working on a project called Breathe & Smile, a free programme for kids between 6 to 12 and their families to explore yoga, mindfulness, art therapy, and singing bowls. The short and fun “Feeling Better” episodes can be watched on So Yoga social media, youtube, and podcast channels.

On understanding kids’ emotions and thoughts

As a mother of three, it is important to teach my children to recognise their emotions, instead of fighting them. Breathing techniques are especially powerful to manage emotions. Children love the freedom of exploring movement and their bodies on the mat without competition.

Where else can they breathe like rabbits, behave like cats and dogs, or fly like an eagle? Yoga gives kids a framework to identify, express and release emotions (e.g. stress). It is an essential tool for them to know how to feel better and happier as they grow.

On curating yoga classes for kids with special needs

Yoga is incredibly beneficial to kids who need physical or mental health support, such as ADHD, autism spectrum or other types of developmental, intellectual, sensory or physical challenges.

Yoga can stimulate infants, kids and teen development to grow confidence, manage emotions and improve overall wellbeing. Although it is sometimes challenging, I feel grateful whenever I get to teach these children.

On bringing yoga to schools

The MiniYOGI by So Yoga programme is certified by Singapore’s Ministry of Education and implemented in over 15 kindergarten, primary and secondary schools. It is wonderful to share the gift of yoga to as many children as possible in local and international schools.

My vision is to integrate yoga within the main curriculum. Imagine your children having a 5-min breathing and stretching session to start the day or in between classes. Benefits are scientifically proven to enhance physical, emotional and academic engagement. It will make a difference to their vitality and focus.

On empowering adults to be role models

Parents and teachers are models to children. To grow mindful, authentic and confident kids, adults need to recognise their own needs and wellbeing too. As we practise yoga regularly, the more children will benefit too.

At home and at school, rituals are recommended. Mindful routines such as morning breathwork, gratitude exercises, and practising yoga together are great. Yoga is not about perfecting a pose. It is about being in the moment, breathing, and moving purposefully.

On attending a kids yoga class

They are vibrant, energetic, and inclusive! Every class comes with a curated theme (e.g. Christmas, jungle, chakras) so it is always different and allows kids to discover yoga in meaningful ways.

We usually begin in a circle for breathing and warm-up exercises. We move into yoga poses, imitating animal postures and sounds, which are introduced through stories or songs. Then, we transition slowly into quiet time and relaxation. My focus is to teach in an accessible and joyful way so kids practise while having fun.

“On Wellness” is a regular series featuring our renowned team of practitioners. Book a kids yoga class with Sophie Spoor and make transformational shifts today.
